It is a direct descendant of this idea from the feudal system that you weren't allowed to own land unless you grew crops on the land and made it "productive", like otherwise you were wasting it and showing you were a lazy bum who didn't deserve to have it

I'm at the point where whenever I see the sprawl aesthetic (lawns, McMansions, etc), even in photos, I associate it with the smell of car exhaust.

I’m disabled, so I pay someone $80 a month to cut the quarter acre of green space my house isn’t taking up that, by the way, I can’t use because allergies, asthma, and again, disabled.
