Screen savers started as this and then just evolved into the desktop version of having what we would today call a "lock screen"

OLEDs have gotten almost to that point, but just to make sure (because everyone got paranoid about burn in with plasmas) there’s all sorts of lovely mitigation features, like things that make health bars and menus in video games less luminous, the mute icon dancing, etc

You can tell because a lot of popular screen savers defeated the whole point of having one by being an animation against a static background
