I don't know how applicable this is, but I was kind of raised to believe that the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference, and that love and hate are kind of like heads of the same dragon. I use "passion" as an umbrella term.

It's a useful concept when you're trying to get free of an abusive relationship, because it helps you understand why your abuser deliberately provokes you into hate. It's a lot easier to flip the switch from hate to love than it is from indifference to passion.
