I seriously think this is a specific issue with "trans studies" where trans people were so stigmatized and seen as a "niche" issue by cis people that "scientific, objective" study of trans people by cis people was a magnet for abusers and cranks

"Academic sexology" is absolutely rife with this, it's brimming with dysfunction, and I see no reason the clinical side would be any different
