I seriously think this is a specific issue with "trans studies" where trans people were so stigmatized and seen as a "niche" issue by cis people that "scientific, objective" study of trans people by cis people was a magnet for abusers and cranks

Like when mainstream science finally discovered the existence of trans people in 2014 they went looking for "objective" sources who presented themselves as experts on transness And a fuckton of cis people who were in that position were creeps of one kind or another

My sense is there's a lot about therapy that's like - non-medical? It works well because people need a private place to talk through their feelings, not to undergo 'analysis'
