I refuse not to pronounce the third ALIEN film's title as "Alien Cubed"

I remember Descent 3 had the 3 written as an exponent, I guess to imply that this final Descent game was truly 3D, even though it wasn't really any more or less 3D than the previous ones (where the whole selling point was it was the first "fully 3D" six-degrees-of-motion game)

Also it confused young me because they for some reason branded the freespace games as “descent: freespace”

Descent: Freespace was in fact originally supposed to be part of the Descent series, it was their original idea for Descent 3 -- the player character vanishes into parts unknown from an uncontrolled warp at the end of Descent 2 and they send ships out to look for him

But then there was a lot of internal company politics and they split the team in half, and half the team went on to make Descent 3 as a straight sequel to Descent 2 and the free-flight space sim became its own thing

It's funny, because that makes the title of "Descent^3" extra silly, the game was specifically conceived of as *not* wildly expanding the game from its original roots

Also they did in fact want to drop "Descent" from "Descent: FreeSpace" and make it "Freespace: The Great War", after it was no longer part of the Descent series But they couldn't because there's a disk management utility called "FreeSpace" and they'd get into trademark trouble

As a result it's officially "Descent: FreeSpace -- The Great War" Same nested-subtitle situation as "Star Wars: Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Academy" And then the sequel is just FreeSpace 2

(I have a tremendous amount of affection for both franchises and still think of them as the same thing myself as they are the original reason I got a joystick)

I don’t know if you’ve played Overload, but it’s a SDOF game recently made by a lot of former Descent/Freespace devs.
