I think it's very clear that no one is meant to be a clear one to one map to one side or the other of that conflict, like nuBSG did, and Druckmann's public statements back up that he's referencing more his general feelings on violence and fighting over land than direct things

I never looked up EXACTLY which scenes were part of the leaks, but I could kind of actually see where the Abby = trans thing could have been a good faith interpretation by someone if they got one or both of the scenes where she seems upset that Mel *and not her* got pregnant
-
Like I think it's an unintended and wrong implication but as soon as I got to that part in the tutorial I immediately wondered (having confirmed with a friend who read actual spoilers that Abby was not trans) whether that was what made people think she was

Like in a slash fic Abby would just be a guy, it'd be set in the past and be about a tough PTSD-haunted veteran cheating on his pregnant housewife with his battle buddy But it's not really framed that way in this setting, Owen is very straight
-
Owen and Mel's final fight is over him still having that macho impulse to go and save Abby as the white knight, which is amplified in him *because* Abby is normally so tough and doesn't need his help
