Yeah so the reason I immediately shoot down anybody who says something like "I think JKR IS intelligent/talented, but..." is because I don't believe anybody makes those statements from a factual basis I feel like those evaluations come from something I call "hype-based inertia"

Like, do you think John McCain was a maverick who routinely broke with the shibboleths of the Republican establishment? Well, you can't prove that because it simply never happened but you may have a distinct sense that he WAS a maverick, for some hazy, ill-remembered reason

And that's because decades of messaging that didn't merely hype John McCain as a maverick but expressedly _took it for granted_ that everybody already thought of him as one has incepted the idea that he was indeed a maverick in the common consciousness And now that "feels right"

People don't interrogate their idea that McCain was a maverick because that idea has already been subliminally Trojan'ed into their subconscious as something they already fact-checked and affirmed at some point in the past Never mind that they can't remember the reasoning now

That's hype-based inertia. It's people parroting an ill-considered character evaluation because the messaging was so pervasive it wore down their resistance to the idea Now it feels so foundational to believe it that their hackles raise instinctively at evidence to the contrary

You can't prove McCain was a maverick because he just never was And you can't prove Rowling is intelligent or talented either, which is helped along by the fact that even definitions of "intelligence" and "talent" are allowed to be comfortably nebulous for these purposes

It works in the other direction too, like if someone has been subject to relentless smears long enough then even someone defending them feels obligated to say "Well of course I think they're a controversial person and a bit of a clown but"
