There were other options, but wizards had neither the need nor discretion to do it in a receptacle and then do away with it, they could just vanish it. The point of chamberpots and holes in the ground was so you could be discreet as Muggles can’t just vanish it.

If this was the case then there's no reason for them to have adopted indoor plumbing. Vanishing is still more efficient. There's no wasted resources and no maintenance required.

Right, this whole mess (so to speak) comes from JKR realizing that the Chamber of Secrets entrance being in the girls' bathroom raises all these questions about when wizards adopted indoor plumbing and when that bathroom was built And then she answers them really horribly

Like absolutely nothing about her explanation makes it at all clear to us why they made the transition at all -- in fact it emphasizes why it DOESN'T make sense (because putting in the plumbing was a huge expensive project that allowed a Dark wizard to infiltrate Hogwarts)
