An example? There’s no fan-invented lore? Because people in the fandom up until recently has the respect not to think they’re better than the writer. If they’re such good writers then, why are they piggybacking off of JK’s incredible world building?

The fact you’re using Harry Potter fanfiction as your argument ironically defeats your argument - they’re using her world as a basis because it’s so good. The quality of fan fiction is irrelevant because it is someone else’s pre-built world

This is cringe, man, and what's worse it would've been cringe back in 2002

Great counter-argument. Do please carry on telling me that JK’s world building is so awful that it opens up a world of possibility for “amazing” fanfiction, which wouldn’t exist had it not been for her world building

Like- many of the best fandoms arise out of post mortems of disappointing to awful series. I read hp fandom way past giving up on the books.
Idk man- *are* you young? It’s okay to like things that aren’t master class. I’m still fond of Eddings.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

I’m not denying flaws in the series, JK is surpassed by many great fiction writers of the past. But targeting her world building and insinuating that fanfiction which uses her world as a basis, shows better world-building than her is ludicrous and completely paradoxical

The "better worldbuilding" in various fanfics is better precisely because it makes an effort to fix obvious problems with hers

Yes but those fanfics wouldn’t exist without her world in the first place. I’m getting at the fact that fanfics can’t demonstrate better world-building than original fiction because they’re using a pre-existing world. Sure what they write might be great, but it’s not original

And I’m not saying that unoriginal fiction is bad because they didn’t put in the hard work, but using fanfiction to discredit the original author’s world building is utterly paradoxical and baseless.

Lol no it isn't, people write better stories based on worse stories ALL THE TIME That's how half the creative process works -- if it weren't possible then nothing could improve

JK Rowling herself editing a rough draft of a chapter to make it better is (attempting to) make a better work based on a worse one Come on

Yes, but say for example that her editor edited a chapter to make it better - you don’t credit that editor as better as world-building than JK. Yes their edits were valuable and improved it, but they didn’t create the world

I do if the original worldbuilding sucked and the editing was to make it better
