The Taiping Rebellion is one of my favorite fairly recent incredibly huge things from history that most people have never heard of. Boxer Rebellion & multinational invasion + pillaging of Beijing in 1901 too.

You see the Chinese prejudice against Christian converts as traitors in the Boxer era sounds bad but then you remember the Taiping Rebellion 50 years earlier was a bunch of Christian wackjobs starting one of the bloodiest civil wars in all of history

The whole thing is extra funny because I have literally known multiple people who had a serious mental health crisis from flunking out of college who as a result developed their own bizarre version of Christianity
