I don't relate to them either, but our tastes don't govern the decisions to end games and narratives this way. The tastes of toxically masculine gamers—the selfsame ones who "democratically" chose the appearance of the archetypal femshep—do

I mean the fact of the matter is that Shepard is a wish fulfillment character, he/she's the embodiment of power and agency and the will to recreate the status quo with her grit and tenacity alone And she's not _for_ us, she's not a symbol of surviving trauma and marginalization

The kind of neanderthals to whom Shepard is their sexy valkyrie goddess don't WANT to see their symbol of virility bastardized by having her go swords-to-ploughshares; that defeats the point So ofc when they cede control of her by ending the game she goes out in a blaze of glory

I mean maybe? I'm of two minds about this The first is that the JKR Epilogue™ is one of the most INVIDIOUSLY inept pieces of writing of all time, and the first betrayal by a boomer-adjacent Gen-Xer of her mostly Millennial audience The second...https://twitter.com/BootlegGirl/status/1286704072008110085 …

I mean, isn't this a place where we share a little bit with those dudebros at least? Like I don't wanna go all economic insecurity but our lives suck MORE than theirs and for additional reasons, but there are also plenty of the same reasons?

...is that the writing of the ME3 ending is also real fucking bad, not only from a Doylist or Watsonian perspective but even from a transhumanist one, even from a perspective that 2001 is the greatest film ever made And it existed pretty much just to mollify someone else's ego

I also think that metatextually, the second that Mass Effect made waves by including a discount lesbian relationship, the developers were rhetorically locked in to making the series more of a queer story and they couldn't pay it off in a way meant only to satisfy cishet gamers

Should Mass Effect have been given that responsibility? Maybe not, but it was the aughts so, any port in a storm This idea of "your character cannot be allowed to exist outside of her responsibilities, once she is free of them she has to cease to exist" is... not great

Like to be clear: in a thread the other day, I defended that Neil Gaiman Sandman story where a trans woman dies because she gets rejected by a moon goddess, and is then buried under her deadname Because you're right, that IS authentic at least in the manner I was told of it

And an ending where Shepard HAS to die wouldn't even have necessarily been bad, except she has to die in a human sacrifice to galactic space magic, which is bad writing Like just say she has to go out like Ellen Ripley because she gets indoctrinated or something, if you must

I could of forgiven the random feeling of the ending if it hadn’t gone the “magic space kid decided they want a sacrifice” route without *admitting* that. Especially for the synthesis ending- why would Shep need to die for that?

Synthesis is the only ending where Shepard absolutely has to die, too Control you can headcanon a whole narrative about to what degree her personality survives, Destroy she straight up *does* survive if you have a maxed out score
