I think it IS hypermasculine. It's the idea that a femshep who besmirched herself by giving birth to Kaiden's kid or something and becoming a mother would be emasculating the character

I mean, the idea that I feel I'll never have a normal life and settle into some kind of comfort after the trauma I've endured in my life doesn't make me a dude, no? And that's why I don't relate to characters who get happy endings like that

I don't relate to them either, but our tastes don't govern the decisions to end games and narratives this way. The tastes of toxically masculine gamers—the selfsame ones who "democratically" chose the appearance of the archetypal femshep—do

I mean the fact of the matter is that Shepard is a wish fulfillment character, he/she's the embodiment of power and agency and the will to recreate the status quo with her grit and tenacity alone And she's not _for_ us, she's not a symbol of surviving trauma and marginalization

The kind of neanderthals to whom Shepard is their sexy valkyrie goddess don't WANT to see their symbol of virility bastardized by having her go swords-to-ploughshares; that defeats the point So ofc when they cede control of her by ending the game she goes out in a blaze of glory

In hindsight I think that what pissed the "retake Mass Effect dammit" crowd was less than Shepard dies at the end, but that she spends the third game slowly breaking down physically and mentally and ends up so visibly *exhausted* at the end.

Okay so I see where you're going with this and I think the disdain for that was how cheaply it was portrayed, in those immensely stupid dreams where Shepard becomes absolutely pathologically obsessed with a single dead human child who may or may not have even existed

The dreams are the weakest part of the game, they're in their own super-heavy weight class of bad of their own.

I HATE the "you must walk slowly now, sprinting is forbidden" genre of Dramatic Game Scene

Or the specific thing where escorted NPCs' speed is exactly in between your walking and your running speed so you're always either getting ahead of them or falling behind
