No one is denying the railroading was meticulously put in place, it just obviously is railroading And even accepting all the railroading, there just doesn't feel like there's the scope to RP this Shepard as being as emotionally stressed by the situation as she should be

This is the same thing I was saying about VtM: Bloodlines the other day, about how Refusal of the Call should be an option even if it's just a game over

Like, _especially_ in Bloodlines where your character is forcibly sired and cut off (apparently quite painfully) from an old life where there were people they loved, and potentially either driven insane or made absolutely hideous, and surrounded by people hostile to them

There should absolutely be an option in that game to go to the Santa Monica docks and await the sunrise And, no, going to the crack house and just letting the goons kill you and shutting off the game after you get a game over isn't the same experience, it's a temper tantrum

I'm gonna be slightly fair here and say that video game mechanics aside, it's actually a mechanical thing in tabletop Vampire that dying by suicide this way is very hard The "Beast" is specifically your vampire nature refusing to allow this to happen

Yeah, but even just failing a willpower check and having your character sprint away from the docks and realize they CAN'T kill themselves suddenly totally justifies their entire involvement in the rest of the plot

This assumes player knowledge matches character knowledge. A dead-end quest for a cure first might be entertaining, especially if it becomes increasingly obvious that you are just being taken for an in-character ride.

Remember how in Bloodlines the Thinbloods have all these inaccurate theories about how vampirism works they got from movies There's the one dude who thinks you turn back if you kill the "head vampire" and you can fuck with him and send him to his death

It always bugged me that your character acts so confident about sneering at their ignorance even though you're just a baby vampire yourself and have no real reason to trust the mentors who've been assigned to you It's kind of assuming the player has metagame knowledge

Also doesn't killing Caine actually do something like that in some Gehenna scenario or other
