And I mean, like, I don't think the Cerberus collaboration was utterly unsalvageable IN 2010 WHEN GROUPS LIKE CERBERUS WEREN'T LITERALLY RAMPAGING IN THE STREETS, but there still should have been drama especially for the Sole Survivor.

Like, at the very least the ability for Shepard to be like DUDE. ILLUSIVE MAN. SPACE BARTLETT. APPRECIATE THE FREE SHIP AND HORNY PSYCHOLOGIST BUT ***YOU KILLED MY FCKING SQUAD AND WHEN THIS IS OVER YOU WILL PAY***. Something like that

That's basically how I responded to him every single time. I mean, my playthrough was Paragon all the way, but I ALWAYS answered Renegade to the Illusive Man. Yet every conversation ended somewhat like "I WILL DO AS I PLEASE, YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE! 'Kay talk to you later, bye xoxo"

Two things REALLY strained my credulity in ME2: 1) the Illusive Man is cool with you going against his wishes like, the entire until the final choice that finally makes him Mad 2) he apparently put no failsafes in place to coerce compliance from Shepard when he rebuilt her

It was, to be blunt, an extremely video gamey setup, even more than the basic idea of a Spectre already had been in 1

Here I am, a player character in a Bioware game, about to enlist in the military "Have you given any thought to what branch and MOS you intend to pursue" No all of that stuff is just backstory for when the plot starts and I become a supersoldier with near total autonomy

I'm only wearing this uniform and abiding by regulations until the crisis starts and they suddenly find all these reasons to let me wear whatever I want and do whatever I want and give me the standard issue awesome ship/fortress for me and my ragtag band of companions

At which point the chain of command will consist of me reporting directly to the person or people in charge of everything and them sighing that they don't know whether to court-martial me or give me a medal (It's always both and neither has material consequences)

The really funny thing is the big twist on KotOR is lampshaded just by Carth freaking out about how unrealistic this trope is and repeatedly berating you about how this doesn't make any sense and isn't how the military works

And because it's an RPG and you're used to this, this just comes off as him being a paranoid wet blanket, which is why a lot of people don't like him

I especially like him getting all huffy about how when the game started the premise was he was your commanding officer and mentor but then you become a Jedi and he becomes a companion NPC and therefore your bitch in all ways
