The really funny thing is the big twist on KotOR is lampshaded just by Carth freaking out about how unrealistic this trope is and repeatedly berating you about how this doesn't make any sense and isn't how the military works

And because it's an RPG and you're used to this, this just comes off as him being a paranoid wet blanket, which is why a lot of people don't like him

Here's my hot take: the entirety of Commander Shepard depends upon lacking consequence for their actions. While the ending to the original game sucked and I don't entirely blame fans for being upset, it matches a pattern of loving the non-consequences

I say this as a former ME superfan too I think the original model for branching games was supposed to be choice-and-consequence, and Bioware decided they wanted to save dev time/comply w publisher game length demands, so they cut the consequences
