Absolutely no one who is giving you shit would be giving you shit if the point of your book was that popular hip-hop acts have a problem with misogynistic imagery and lyrics Everyone fucking knows that https://twitter.com/thomaschattwill/status/1286255987767357440 …

The issue is the juxtaposition of "hip-hop culture" as a whole against "reading books" This general idea of high culture and erudition as fundamentally opposed to "hip-hop" and as a source of salvation from it, a gateway to truly growing up and being a better man

It's shit It would still be shit if we subtracted the racial element (although, let's be clear, the racial element obviously matters a fuckton)

If a white guy wrote a memoir sneering indiscriminately about "redneck culture" being inherently self-destructive and anti-intellectual and credited his embrace of Great Books and elite values with helping him overcome his background unlike his benighted peers, it would also suck

A white guy did write that book His name is JD Vance, the book is called Hillbilly Elegy, and it sucks and he sucks

It arguably doesn't suck *as much* because the race thing is in fact a really big huge important thing, and "rednecks" and "hillbillies" really are not in the same crosshairs as Black people in our society But it still fucking sucks

Every conservative take about how poverty and oppression are a group of people's own fault "because of their toxic culture" fucking sucks

And, yes, to entertain the whole "SJW hypocrisy" argument - no "SJW critique" of bad media is intended as some kind of escape hatch from criticism for your own actions

Nobody who argues about the powerful impact racist stereotypes in media have on society would actually argue it's okay for a racist cop who assaults a Black suspect to blame his actions on watching too many racist cop shows

None of them would praise someone writing a memoir saying that I wouldn't, anyway
