Yeah, that's an extremely effective way to guarantee that you will have rapists in your community. Like, 100% guarantee. That's putting a light out front saying "rapists welcome! We will cover for you and shame your victims!" Effective altruism to abusers.

Any time I dip into any of these kinds of communities and start reading, pretty much anywhere anytime, I get the distinct impression "you guys are basically just trying to get girls" which is, to be fair, one of the default behaviors of dudes so it's a decent guess any time. 1/

But they're such damaged little weasels, all posturing in their own crippled little ways, all feigning smartness and all a little frantic, you can smell the desperation in every word. They're like penguins at the ice's edge, shuffling around trying to push one another in. 2/

But it's not icy water full of leopard seals. It's varying degrees of sexual harassment and assault, and whoever tumbles in will be the one doing it. But they *want* *him* *to*. He's their avatar, testing the waters, getting the poonie, some day they hope to *be* *him*. 3/

This whole thing is goddamn hilarious. They've talked themselves completely into believing that a) they DESERVE a puff piece and b) they're absolutely not going to get one. And watching the whole process of their "thought" is … incredible. https://np.reddit.com/r/slatestarcodex/comments/hgnisg/request_for_screenshotstext/ …

I agree that Vonnegut was brilliant — never more so than when he wrote “Harrison Bergeron,” an amazing story that more than 50 years ago anticipated our precise cultural moment.

Lol people who are fans of only Harrison Bergeron misunderstand its author probably even more than people who are only fans of 1984/Animal Farm misunderstand Orwell You know Vonnegut was extremely left-wing, right Remember the Money River from God Bless You, Mr Rosewater

Yep, Vonnegut was left wing, no question. And, you’re right, so was George Orwell, who recognized the evils of Communism. And so was George Carlin, who famously said:pic.twitter.com/Ute5ClybP7

Carlin had some bad takes, as did Orwell and Vonnegut Still and all, that particular story is one Vonnegut was famous for getting pissed at people taking out of context (including in the context of a court case)

Whatever Carlin’s bad takes were, the above quote wasn’t one of them. Neither, for that matter, was Orwell’s take on Communism, which was dead solid perfect. Unassailable, in fact. And I’d love to hear people’s reservations about the moral behind “Harrison Bergeron.”

You understand that the story is not a defense of capitalism in any sense, right, and the thing that really pissed Vonnegut off was seeing it used as an argument for unequal funding of school districts (something he argued against AT LENGTH in God Bless You, Mr Rosewater)
