Calling someone a racist can be actionable, calling someone an idiot or jerk is mere vulgar abuse and not actionable. I don't think the courts are interested in white fragility woo.

I thought calling someone racist was libellous but am happy to admit I was wrong, however the point still stands that there is a difference between defamation and criticism and an LA Times journalist should know this.
