Idk, man, I feel like this is more a self-perpetuated meme than a reality. A lot of open world enthusiasts take it as gospel but I haven't actually seen a lot of evidence it's true and a fair bit of contradictory evidence in how exhausted and sick of open worlds people are.

(On TVTropes this is called Always Close It's a necessary trope, arguably, because either way you do it deflates the tension - if it is possible to fail, and a certain % of people fail over and over again, then it goes from being cool and exciting to obnoxious)

The biggest place I note this kind of mechanic recently is avoiding instakills of players. Like when I played TLOU2 on Survivor+ I was already at minimum health after the first Infected fight, and so the scripted scene that's supposed to have an infected take you to zero >

The reboot of Medal of Honour has a bit where you have to man the tail gun of a Chinook to keep the Taliban back in Takur Ghar and I got called away from the PC for four hours and came back to learn that if you don't shoot at them, they don't shoot back. Unintentionally poignant
