Grinding is almost never necessary, but honestly *most* games that are RPGs period have a siloed combat minigame.

Which does matter a lot for immersion, at least to me It's hard to keep on teleporting to "battle space" and not totally break the mimesis and feel like you're watching a movie and then playing an unrelated board game in between scenes

(Battle Space is less common than it used to be, too. FF7R doesn't use it at all directly.) I mean on the other extreme this is a problem with the open world game sphere, right? A lot of narrative tricks in visual media are about the manipulation & creation of environment spaces

CT for my purposes still has a Swirly Battle Transition since the game UX is completely different in battle vs. out of battle
