urkel is easily the best part of family matters. we’re not even through the first season, but until he shows up it’s a pretty by-the-numbers family sitcom. nothing really stands out. and then suddenly this amazing, charismatic, and physical comic actor shows up.

Yeah as much as people joke about the Winslow family getting their show "hijacked" by this Urkel kid, the show was legitimately headed for cancelation before that point and Urkel absolutely saved it

Jaleel White has this absolutely fearless level of commitment that you rarely see in child actors or even young heartthrob actors Like I really think Urkel, who on paper is just a stock clown character, stood out not just because of his race but his age

Like Jaleel White self-deprecatingly says "All I was doing was an impression of Martin Short from SNL but because I was Black people saw it as a new thing" But it's not just that, it's that Martin Short was in his 40s and Jaleel White was fucking 13

That he's just nailing the bit with the confidence and total shamelessness you only normally see in veteran actors who've had their whole lives to develop that DGAF energy

Like I do think it bears pointing out that White was actually a teenager and in that terrifying adolescent phase where you really really care what people think of you And he was making a living embodying this stereotype of everything teenage boys don't want to be, on national TV

(As an aside, during the retrospective interview White said that playing Steve Urkel himself was fine and his friends were all chill with it But it was dressing up in drag to play Myrtle Urkel that almost sent him into a panic attack having to go to school the next day)

(However you feel about the joke with Myrtle Urkel, it is... something hearing him talk about breaking down in tears right before shooting and his dad saying "Son you don't have to do this" and him going "No I'm a professional" and then nailing it)
