Did his “personal failings” appear out of thin air? I believe it’s describing the story of how he struggled with certain cultural norms and pressures he ultimately decided weren’t good or productive, in pursuit of ones he felt were better.

I'm saying that there's plenty of toxic masculinity to go around in everyone's culture, including elevated elite Great Book-reading white-coded culture, and singling out hip-hop as problematic is disingenuous
