You’ll notice the title isn’t “Why I Blame All My Personal Failings on Hip Hop Culture.”
No, but it's describing the story of how he "beat" his personal failings as "beating hip-hop culture"
Did his “personal failings” appear out of thin air? I believe it’s describing the story of how he struggled with certain cultural norms and pressures he ultimately decided weren’t good or productive, in pursuit of ones he felt were better.
Yeah, that's what I said
He’s not allowed to examine his own cultural viewpoints and evaluate them?
Not when it's attacking a whole bunch of other people and their "culture" as somehow being the cause of his own shitty actions
He’s not attacking anyone. He’s examining his own upbringing and desire to adhere to the social and cultural norms he was surrounded by, which he found to be negative. That’s his experience. It’s a memoir. That’s the point of it.
Yes He's blaming hip-hop culture for his own personal failings How is this any different than what I said
Because you’re acting like his “personal failings” magically appeared, independent of the cultural and social influence in which he grew up and which he struggled to emulate as a young man, even though you know they’re related and that that is the point of the book.
Yeah because many many people who listen to the same music lack those failings and this argument is a shitty blame-dodging argument right on the face of it
So because there are examples of people who didn’t succumb to those pressures as deeply, the very idea of succumbing to those pressures is completely ridiculous? Or, perhaps, people are different and have different experiences and get through life in different ways?
