Funny that you bring up Star Wars - I know plenty of people who like both Han Solo and Kylo Ren. Doesn't seem any different than this

I like Han and Kylo. But I like Kylo as a villain, and killing Han is part of the reason. Han being a hero means I might like him less if he did something bad. I can understand seeing the fireflies as the heroes, and for them the symbol means "Look for the light"...

...But that feels like a big misreading of them as an organization, even if you think brain coring Ellie was the right thing to do.

I think it's reasonable to think the Fireflies are good. The writers of the games certainly think it's reasonable - them coming back and Abby and Lev joining them is literally the bright thing the load screen changes to once you beat the game

The issue is thinking that 1) you are on Joel's side all the time and 2) you like the Fireflies

It's a double sided thing, isn't it At first it seems like truly believing the world can be fixed makes you the hero and accepting this is just the way the world is now and humanity's slow death is inevitable makes you the villain, or at least an antihero

Yeah, like, it's pretty telling that the one thing that's constantly associated with these people who want to Bring Back the Old instead of finding a new paradigm in which to live is torture, fanaticism, and death; any sacrifice can be justified by "a world saved/reborn"

On the other hand, as the situation is presented to us, accepting the status quo means accepting that the eventual extinction of humanity is inevitable (the Cordyceps keeps on spreading through the environment and there's nothing the survivors can do about it)

I don't really get that vibe, personally, quite the reverse - but I'm very attached to my interpretation of "this game is about letting go of grief and no longer being tormented by the desire to go back."

(and tbf while Ellie's journals very much indicate that humanity right now just has to Deal With Cordyceps Being a Thing, it also indicates humanity as a whole is doing ok; they've villages & caravans. it's just not in the position of all-conqueror of the Earth anymore)

I dunno about that Clickers and Bloaters seem to be functionally immortal, and when they do die the Cordyceps spores just infect the soil and vegetation around them And worse, over time they're evolving further - what if the Rat King isn't an anomaly but the next phase

See my counter argument is that A: they very easily could clear the bastards out, and indeed seem reasonably successful at doing so, in small spaces. And B: there's too many Runners for humanity to be dwindling. WAY too many.

Heck, the fungus very transparently only really thrives in Old World buildings - we've yet to see any real growths "in the wild;" it exists entirely as a hazard which could be destroyed if people were willing to torch or clear out the ruins. This feels...symbolic.
