I've seen a few people use the firefly symbol as an unofficial logo for TLOU. It's a cool design, and it doesn't feel as weird as getting an imperial star wars crest, given that there are no "good guys" in TLOU. Getting mad about that now seems weird though.

Funny that you bring up Star Wars - I know plenty of people who like both Han Solo and Kylo Ren. Doesn't seem any different than this

I like Han and Kylo. But I like Kylo as a villain, and killing Han is part of the reason. Han being a hero means I might like him less if he did something bad. I can understand seeing the fireflies as the heroes, and for them the symbol means "Look for the light"...

...But that feels like a big misreading of them as an organization, even if you think brain coring Ellie was the right thing to do.

I think it's reasonable to think the Fireflies are good. The writers of the games certainly think it's reasonable - them coming back and Abby and Lev joining them is literally the bright thing the load screen changes to once you beat the game

The issue is thinking that 1) you are on Joel's side all the time and 2) you like the Fireflies

It's a double sided thing, isn't it At first it seems like truly believing the world can be fixed makes you the hero and accepting this is just the way the world is now and humanity's slow death is inevitable makes you the villain, or at least an antihero

Yeah, like, it's pretty telling that the one thing that's constantly associated with these people who want to Bring Back the Old instead of finding a new paradigm in which to live is torture, fanaticism, and death; any sacrifice can be justified by "a world saved/reborn"

On the other hand, as the situation is presented to us, accepting the status quo means accepting that the eventual extinction of humanity is inevitable (the Cordyceps keeps on spreading through the environment and there's nothing the survivors can do about it)

This is the whole thing with the flashback with Adam and Sidney in 2 It's an explicit rule in Jackson that Jackson's safety and prosperity comes from putting Jackson first and letting the outside world take care of itself

Those two idealistic teenagers refuse to just accept this and demand the opportunity to try to do something more with their lives, which is why they go looking to join the remnants of the Fireflies And for this they are horribly punished

That's why Ellie confronts Joel in that moment A mirror of Tess' "We are shitty people" speech in 1 She's come to believe it's fundamentally unjust that she and Joel are alive because they don't care and Adam and Sidney died horribly because they did
