Eh, they explicitly trade with people and allow trade and newcomers. What I'd say is the essential difference is Jackson is approaching this for the long haul and the Fireflies want just like...one grand redemptive reclamation within their lifetimes.
Which comes back to the whole "this is a *religion* to the Fireflies," it's not like... building a future, building something sustainable. It's "we are working to reclaim the old world that is our due, within our lifetime, and for this greater good any sacrifice is acceptable."
