I've seen a few people use the firefly symbol as an unofficial logo for TLOU. It's a cool design, and it doesn't feel as weird as getting an imperial star wars crest, given that there are no "good guys" in TLOU. Getting mad about that now seems weird though.
Funny that you bring up Star Wars - I know plenty of people who like both Han Solo and Kylo Ren. Doesn't seem any different than this
I like Han and Kylo. But I like Kylo as a villain, and killing Han is part of the reason. Han being a hero means I might like him less if he did something bad. I can understand seeing the fireflies as the heroes, and for them the symbol means "Look for the light"...
...But that feels like a big misreading of them as an organization, even if you think brain coring Ellie was the right thing to do.
I think it's reasonable to think the Fireflies are good. The writers of the games certainly think it's reasonable - them coming back and Abby and Lev joining them is literally the bright thing the load screen changes to once you beat the game
The issue is thinking that 1) you are on Joel's side all the time and 2) you like the Fireflies
It's a double sided thing, isn't it At first it seems like truly believing the world can be fixed makes you the hero and accepting this is just the way the world is now and humanity's slow death is inevitable makes you the villain, or at least an antihero
But then it turns out genuinely believing the world can be fixed and everything made right again means that you're the one willing to murder a teenage girl and being the one who doesn't have any such faith means you're the one who won't do that
