Yeah, I'm by far the most familiar with MLP fandom stuff, and you see this pattern all over the place there, where massive holes in the structure of the show, its sometimes ludicrous looseness, gives rise to great material.

For example, what even is the Everfree Forest? It's presented in like two or three different ways that essentially contradict each other. Is it an eldritch abomination or, like, a regular ass forest? How is it perceived? Deeply unclear.

I don't think that's true in all cases; there's a lot of fanfic around universes like ATLA where the original works are pretty good artistically. It's definitely easier to write for a universe which is sprawling and messy and serialized rather than self contained though.
