There are *a lot* of people who still aren't aware that The Thing and The Fly - two of the most enduring and popular horror movies of the 80's - were both remakes of horror movies from the 50's.

The better an original work is, the harder it is to find a justification for doing a derivative work of it, and the more harshly any such derivative work will be judged This is the basic reason that fanfic by nature has a bad reputation

Best example IMO is The Wizard of Oz; every time there’s a sequel, prequel or whatever, people lose their damn minds, but the Judy Garland movie was actually the fourth movie made (L. Frank Baum himself was involved with the first one).
