    1. Dr. Ellie Lockhart. Republic serial villain.‏ @BootlegGirl 18 Jul 2020

The video game dad-murder stuff has me thinking about how "Palpatine's family member" in Star Wars can in fact be done well, and was in the form of Mara Jade. She was basically the Abby to Luke's Ellie or maybe even the other way around, and Sheev was the Joel/Jerry

It's actually kind of disappointing that I don't think any of the authors ever got into Mara's fond memories of Palpatine. It sounds really silly but I've always felt that while he's completely evil Palpatine had room for SOME depth

An interesting interpretation is that Palpatine believes that the Jedi have the same motives as him but are hypocritical. He seems to lead them into morally dubious situations (leading Clone armies, arresting him without trial) partly to show that their morality is kind of phoney

This would track with how flimsy his attempt to turn Luke was. "See, you finally got angry. You're being honest with yourself so let's get on with being evil."

I mean, tbf it worked on Anakin.

True, though it felt like movie Anakin would have turned to the dark side in exchange for a ham sandwich.

Anakin wasn't just angry, he was worried about Padme. And in his case, as with Luke's, he comes closest to the Dark Side when loved ones are threatened. (But Luke is healthier so he doesn't get as close)

It's not completely illogical, but I always felt like Anakin's descent was always a bit rushed and over simplistic in the movies

An example of the kind of moment I'd have liked to see is some self important general sending Anakin and his squad into a bad, pointless fight where they lose tons of men. Anakin is so angry over the loss of his comrades because of bad command decisions he kills the general.

What complicates this is that the Jedi *are* the generals in the Clone Wars and no one outranks them except the Chancellor
