It's classy. Especially if you're wearing horrible trousers. Also it's kind of whimsical, because it's silly, as opposed to using a baseball bat which is way more practical.

I mean, have you seen the Last of Us 2 scene? Because it's not "whimsical" there, and it also makes more sense than using a bat because of the specific context in which it's being used

It's kind of inherently whimsical if they did it for an Easter Egg. Although I don't know if you're supposed to go, "Oh wow, it's like Bioshock!" at that second, that would suggest a terrible misjudgement of priorities during a pretty important moment.

Rewatching it out of any larger context, there's still a whimsical element to it., even if it's not funny or lighthearted in execution. She picks up the golf club when she's got a gun, her boot, any number of knives. The club is brutal, but there's a dark humour to using it.

Oh I misread your initial response as about New Vegas. No, this is 13 years after Bioshock, not 3, I don't think people were thinking of Bioshock.

I would guess that either they went with the golf club bc of... well, some fairly specific and graphic details that I won't directly describe in a self-RTed tweet but you can picture the advantage over a baseball bat, and how they specifically wanted to actually kill the victim

Ah yeah. Eww,

That was one of the scenes that leaked well ahead of release and pissed the GamerBoys the hell off, but personally I have zero objections. I would have had the player press a controller button to swing the club, even, solely bc it would have pissed them off more (and I like Joel)

This got me thinking of the power gauge from GTA V's golf mini-game. They could have implemented that. Get the power right and job done, mess it up and you go again. Keep messing it up and the situation becomes horrifyingly awkward for everybody involved.

Well, Abby had been intentionally "messing up" for at least like half an hour when the scene begins. She wanted to kill him slower, but her friends made her kill Joel so that they could leave before more of his allies showed up

Having a golf simulator interface superimposed on this scene would be hilariously awful "Hook!" "Slice!" "Whiff -- try again!"

I think if you watch this scene carefully you can see she selects an iron, not a driver, specifically because she doesn't want to "rush this"
