It's weird bc as I recall the achievement was "A Slave Obeys," a reference which at that point was three years old it'd be like if an early PS5 title has a similar trophy called "You Stupid Old Man, You Don't Get to Rush This". It feels... overly recent

Golf club I think pops up in one of the Hitman games, and it's definitely in GTA Vice City. Golfing people down to a pulp is a very GTA thing.

It's classy. Especially if you're wearing horrible trousers. Also it's kind of whimsical, because it's silly, as opposed to using a baseball bat which is way more practical.

I mean, have you seen the Last of Us 2 scene? Because it's not "whimsical" there, and it also makes more sense than using a bat because of the specific context in which it's being used

It's kind of inherently whimsical if they did it for an Easter Egg. Although I don't know if you're supposed to go, "Oh wow, it's like Bioshock!" at that second, that would suggest a terrible misjudgement of priorities during a pretty important moment.

Rewatching it out of any larger context, there's still a whimsical element to it., even if it's not funny or lighthearted in execution. She picks up the golf club when she's got a gun, her boot, any number of knives. The club is brutal, but there's a dark humour to using it.

Oh I misread your initial response as about New Vegas. No, this is 13 years after Bioshock, not 3, I don't think people were thinking of Bioshock.

I would guess that either they went with the golf club bc of... well, some fairly specific and graphic details that I won't directly describe in a self-RTed tweet but you can picture the advantage over a baseball bat, and how they specifically wanted to actually kill the victim

(in game, Ellie becomes specifically traumatized because she can only remember Joel's face after... what happens... and can't even draw it from memory, and ends the Cycle of Violence when she is able to picture it again)

A golf club's shaft is designed to be as light as possible, putting all the weight in the head, which means it's actually write fragile if you hit anything with the shaft and not the head, making it pretty bad as a weapon for combat

But that's kind of the point of why it makes such a grisly murder weapon Because, much like the difference between the sport of golf vs baseball, a golf club is for delivering maximum force to an unmoving helpless target

killing someone with a golf club is making a point of it, so to speak
