Funny enough, in the recent comics there's straight up a part where they offer Chief a promotion straight to Admiral for all he's done, and he says "nah, 'The Admiral' doesn't have the same ring to it". And Ron Perlman's like "did...did you just make a joke"

Yeah, thats the thing, Master Chief is the highest non-officer rank in the Navy, that's why he still has to take orders from everyone. But it's like "hey we'll finally make you an officer and just put you in charge of tons of stuff" and he's like "nah, it'll ruin my brand".

Did they ever make him more interesting like in the outside material in the later games?

Halo 4, the first new title after Bungie left, is one of my favorites because they gave him the ability to speak during gameplay instead of just during cutscenes, so he could now express his feelings on stuff and his banter with Cortana is now two-sided.

He's still very stoic but he's less "cool man of few words" and more "kind of emotionally stunted but cares very strongly about the things he cares about". Big aspect of the story is how even though Cortana is the AI and he's the man, she's always been the more human of the two.

Except this predates it! H4 is 2012, The New Order was 2014.

But obviously "let's unpack to some degree what being an ultramasculine murder machine actually means" is a winning formula.

That’s more his characterization in the sequel anyway, in New Order he’s more just an avenging angel of Nazi killing

I liked id coming out and confirming that BJ and Doomguy are essentially the same person because BJ is Doomguy's great-great grandfather (Doomguy's canon name is probably William Blazkowicz III)

The fact that they threw Flynn Taggart onto a book on alternate universes in Doomguy's mancave as a nod to the novels is fun

And he made Taggart's name into the password for his PC
