Not to mention that while I love the Chief and he's a much more developed character in the books, he's a fairly archetypal space marine in Halo 1 and has his characterization decreased into mostly cool one-liners in 2 and 3. In contrast, Arbiter has full motivations and an arc.

I think Halo 2 was also a big (and divisive) surprise, much like MGS2 a few years earlier. People were not happy with not playing as MC for a huge chunk of that game as I recall (I didn’t play it myself but I remember hearing boys whine about it lol)

I think the Arbiter was voiced by Keith David though so he’s automatically more interesting than generic green armor man lolpic.twitter.com/OFm9zlJ1S3

Funny enough, in the recent comics there's straight up a part where they offer Chief a promotion straight to Admiral for all he's done, and he says "nah, 'The Admiral' doesn't have the same ring to it". And Ron Perlman's like "did...did you just make a joke"

You can jump into officer with a good record. My dad left the Marines after failing to pull this off when I was a toddler.

When you more or less singlehandedly won a 27 year war against an alien menace, I think everyone will be okay with letting you skip a few ranks

"a few" is like, Captain to Admiral, Commander if you're pushing it. The Master Chief is great, but not only is he a non-com, he's a ground pounder, what the hell is he gonna do as an Admiral? What's he know about ships? Who thought he would want to be an officer anyway?

It's basically the principle that when you reach "Father of the Country" levels of acclaim you get to put any bling you want on your dress uniform, including any rank insignia

He doesn't wear a dress uniform though, probably doesn't even know where his is. I'm all for giving the Chief his due, but make it like a special appointment. Something unique that lets him still go out and shoot people in the face. Cause an admiral just doesn't get to do that.
