Something that actually interests me is that Bioware has never really worked with the Celebrity Voice Actor Squad

Wait, Troy Baker doesn't count now? Is it because it was before he became mainstream with TLOU or am I missing something?

Yeah you did kind of ignore Troy Baker playing Kai Leng

Oh God he played Kai Leng? So, uh, that raises another question. People have been (I thought pretty justifiably) all over Naughty Dog for casting Laura Bailey as a Black woman twice. But are there actually, like, any minorities IN the VA union?

It's really not about "the union", which isn't nearly as small as you're portraying it, but about the informal A-list

Blaming the "union model" for lack of diversity is a common union-buster talking point so I feel the need to push back on this The union is not the reason for the A-list and most members of the union aren't on the A-list The A-list would exist no matter what

A lot of people have this ideal for voiceover specifically, where no one has to see your face, that they should do blind open auditions for every casting call and listen to hundreds of MP3s off http://Voice123.com and you or I should have a fair shot next to Troy Baker

This is nonsense, no company would ever agree to do this, and they shouldn't have to do it Especially in creative fields, people want to work with people they've worked with before, not just in terms of talent but personality and reliability

That does lead to lily-white old boy networks in practice but that's the result of the industry people's choices of what networks to cultivate The workers being unionized doesn't have much to do with it Freelance writing, which is generally not unionized, is EXTREMELY cliquey

For one thing, if you really want to work with someone, you can just call the union and tell them to let them join (This is called "Taft-Hartleying", after the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act that says a closed shop cannot actually stop the employer from hiring someone)

This is a whole thing now with the proliferation of low budget indie projects - an increasingly common backdoor into SAG-AFTRA is to "self-Taft-Hartley", make your own movie and star in it and call it a union gig They don't really like this but it works

Anyway that's just to say it's not the union that's the issue If the companies wanted more diverse casts they could have them easily, one way or another The issue is with the industry
