Apparently the issue is this exploit involved reassigning the email address associated with the accounts and resetting the password, so it wasn't long term undetectable You couldn't get into the account without the real owner being locked out, giving yourself away

So there's a strict time limit on doing whatever you were gonna do with your access, especially given that they were targeting people who were famous and connected Spying on their DMs for a month wasn't an option

The Bitcoin scam really is the easiest way to just grab a lot of money off of this and disappear without leaving traces You could've made more by putting a big short on Amazon and having Jeff Bezos announce his retirement but it would've been way way riskier

The way I see it - you're going to get caught within a day after the first time you do this and the exploit will be patched So when you do it, you might as well blow your cover in a way that makes you a lot of money at once, hence the Bitcoin scam

Other, subtler stuff, like trawling through everyone's archived DMs for blackmail material, will have to be saved for later I think we probably can expect some fallout in months to come
