"Bad person" is a judgment you're applying to it, not me. I'm just saying if we don't even agree on whether such depictions are supposed to be "badass!" or "oh fuck, no, no, oh god" then we *cannot be said to be using the same vocabulary*

Not "I think there's artistic value in making the violence visceral so it will be unpleasant" but "I find the visceral violence pleasant" "If the enemies don't truly suffer when you kill them then what's the point of doing so"

I guess in our post-Columbine world we're all trying to distance ourselves from the era of Postal and the like

I am thinking back to old CRPGs and how Bioware's idea of Renegade Shepard is supposed to be more nuanced than old school Evil characters but there was a certain integrity in having Evil just be straight up Evil

my hot take is that the Renegade notion undergoes serious transformation from 1 to 2. in ME1 the renegade options really are sorta bad and mean-spirited. in ME2 they've sanded off the rough edges, and now it's just shepard not having any patience for bullshit.

There's a certain basic problem in that ultimately classic Evil is just kind of petty and uninteresting, more than it being "unrealistic." Trump is pretty much classic hardcore Evil as fuck. He's also, you know, monstrously boring and intolerable to have in your world.

lol, like in BG2 it's just so dumb, the "evil!" options are like "i fuck these people over for pocket change" and the "Good" options are "i give these people something that costs me nothing in exchange for 20k quest experience" "evil" in that context just means "short-sighted"

lol in Bioshock at least it's vaguely balanced, in BG2 the good options get you benefits that are so incredibly wildly better it's hard to express

Luckily thanks to their vague adherence to Star Wars canon the KotOR games did in fact make the Dark Side obviously better than the Light Side because Force Lightning is obviously better than any other action one can take within in the game engine

We have very different memories of KotOR
I always found Lightside buffs and force speed much better than having a 3.x fireball equivalent
