That's not generally how people have been taking it, in my experience. A lot of people have basically come at it (imo not unreasonably) as "Ellie is becoming a monster, and Abby is a straight up hero." like Ellie is *raving* when she gets to the beach.

Ellie is becoming a monster, but Abby is already one (and becoming less of one). The fact that she can, you know, beat a man's face in in the tutorial and be unfazed is not meant to be a credit to her, and not just because of who the guy was

Which is why *it's so important that the game actively gives her hero Hollywood beats the entire rest of the game* and hits you with ABBY HAS ADORKABLE FRIENDS AND A DORKY DAD with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer

they *literally make her play multiple times with an adorable dog* as mandatory sequences.

Right, and they also reinforce that her friends resent and fear her because even though they hated the guy whose face she beat in, she still beat a guy's face in and was unbothered Like you may be right, she may literally be a response to Uncharted being criticized over this

For Ellie, the violence is abnormal, so it's visceral and I guess gross to people who aren't caught up in "omg she's gay! And has a knife!" like myself. For Abby, she's like the Terminator, we want her to win but she's lost some of her humanity

The funny thing about people treating her physique as an empowering thing (including the whole mixup over her being trans) is that... in-universe, it's kind of clearly treated as a bad thing It's like Sarah Connor's makeover between T1 and T2

Like Sarah Connor in T2 is iconic and admirable because of her big badass muscles but in-universe she got those as part of the process of becoming a crazy remorseless killer Same thing that happened to Abby between her flashbacks and the present day

The reason Abby gained like 30 pounds of muscle between the ages of 16 and 21 is she spent literally all that time doing nothing but working out and training while fantasizing about crushing Joel's skull

And maybe that's not all bad, that's what gives her the power to save Lev too, but it's certainly not all good And her final moment of redemption, you'll notice, is after the Rattlers have kept her prisoner long enough that her muscles have atrophied away

(Which is why in the ending Ellie can get into a standup fight with her and have anything close to a fair chance)

Yeah and relatedly, why are Ellie's kills more "harrowing"? Because Ellie has Strength 10 or so and has to use a switchblade to slit throats, and Abby, like Joel, can just suffocate people in a way that doesn't make us watch blood spurts *because she's a professional killer*

This is a Thermian argument. It's orthogonal to the question of developer intent.
