"most powerful set of equipment in the game, that is completely useless against the final boss" should be a trope

It's fairly common for haphazardly designed CRPGs to let you cheese through the game with broken status effect abilities that only the bosses are specifically immune to

I'd argue this partly stems from the underlying model that CRPGs ultimately trace their lineage back to not really *having* any conceptual space for the idea of a "boss fight". in OG D&D, if you had a proper cinematic "boss fight", you did something wrong.

It was interesting playing Baldur's Gate again. While great for it's time, it's interesting just how badly the D&D mechanics mapped into a video game (I.e. too easy for a game ending lucky-shot on the hero, or trying to tactically use AoE spells)

Yeah the bad guys having save-or-die spells really fucks up immersion It means you're forced to save scum no matter what, like if you're in a roomful of basilisks you just have to be prepared to load your game whenever you turn to stone

It takes you right out of identifying with your character or having a smooth gameplay experience If you have a well built character who realistically takes precautions in a situation like this then you get the satisfying feeling of... not loading your game as often
