I'd argue this partly stems from the underlying model that CRPGs ultimately trace their lineage back to not really *having* any conceptual space for the idea of a "boss fight". in OG D&D, if you had a proper cinematic "boss fight", you did something wrong.

It was interesting playing Baldur's Gate again. While great for it's time, it's interesting just how badly the D&D mechanics mapped into a video game (I.e. too easy for a game ending lucky-shot on the hero, or trying to tactically use AoE spells)
