Ok - since you asked - the Tom Cotten op ed was constitutional wrong & showed him to be an idiot. But if you argue that it was ok for The NY Times to run it then you are accused of making things more dangerous for black NY times employees.

I have nothing but respect for trans people. But you cannot question growing numbers of trans teens without being called a bigot - never mind what the science behind gender dysphoria suggests.

I remember the Bush era pretty well, and I do in fact remember a lot of annoying Jon Stewart like meta calls to "tolerance" as a value in and of itself that made you better than the Republicans But honestly it was shit discourse even then

There was immense concern trolling at the time about people being personally "intolerant" to people who supported the Iraq war There were all these calls to be "tolerant" to religious right evangelicals and respectful of their beliefs

And any liberal from the time worth a damn - including, on his better days, Jon Stewart - gave the middle finger to that noise Politics is about power and those people had tons of power and were using it to cause harm while hiding behind the "tolerance" bullshit

And everyone knew, back then, that there was no reciprocity Of course the pro-war people don't "tolerate" you in spaces they control (the "Free Speech Zones" on military bases), of course fundie churches aren't "tolerant" inside their own halls

Ah yes. The logical reason we should be as intolerant as the right were 15 years ago. Right on time...

The problem with the Bush years wasn't "intolerance", per se Like if that's what you think it was you are unbearably narcissistic The worst things Bush did had nothing to do with the comfort of American liberal opinion bloggers

The Bush administration wouldn't have been all that much better if they'd given antiwar pundits much greater leeway to criticize them but still had the war anyway

And like to be blunt there WAS a lot of freedom to criticize the war, a lot more than in other countries Jon Stewart had his show, people had newspaper columns, everyone had a blog, there were protests all over the country They had the war anyway
