This is fair, yeah. People were sometimes misogynist in their criticism of her, and that's never cool even when the person is very bad. Which Meyer is. Very bad. Starting with the fact that she's a fucking Mormon, and proceeding rapidly from there.

See also: Critique that just focuses on the aesthetics of her vampire mythology. Or acting like “old vampire obsessed with young woman” is somehow unique to the genre.

Ehhhhh, I think some of the "aesthetics" criticisms were tied to less well-articulated complaints about Meyer's worldbuilding choices (e.g., vamps in her setting are basically magical androids that run on blood, but words like "vampire" and "coven" are obvious marketing darlings)

This got reduced by most of the populous into a really facile derision toward the idea of "sparkly vampires", but the core argument—"this magical species sparkles because they're effectively _carved out of quartz_ and that element is obfuscated by mandatory gothness" is sound

Honestly I think making up an idea that has very little to do with classical vampires but calling them vampires anyway is fine Who cares, it's all made up

Well, to be clear, it's annoying because ultimately Meyer came up with a _more interesting_ (or at least much less explored) idea than simply "vampires" and rather than fully unpack or explore that achievement she _hid_ it behind brazenly crowd-pleasing terminology.

It's like how the original "Secret Wars" comics were so named, despite being neither secret nor wars, because Marvel polled a bunch of children and determined those two words were the coolest Like, okay, cash your check, but don't pretend what you've done isn't cynical

i can't prove meyer did this on purpose, but she wrote about 'vampires' who society hates and fears and who all have unique powers, that's just the x-men, they're mutants, twilight is x-men 92 fanfictionhttps://mobile.twitter.com/seandehey/status/1272297418432761857 …

Eeenh There's a much better case to be made in the Twilight universe that vampires really are an evil curse on humanity than mutants in the X-Men universe

the vulturi are the hellfire club send tweet (i mean i hear you but even in the marvel universe there are like ten magnetos for every professor x)

The Marvel mutants, at least, mostly could just in theory leave people alone, they don't have the universal vampire blood thirst thing where if you don't learn supernatural discipline from Professor X you inevitably start murdering people to drain them dry

And like the core conflict of humans oppressing mutants just isn't a thing Vampires are ridiculously powerful and humans have no power to oppress them They make vague statements that maybe they could if the whole world united against them but it's nowhere close to happening
