part of what's so fiendish about Singal's atlantic article, and the discourse around it, is that it capitalizes on the intersection of stigma against trans people and stigma against children in order to target trans children, a doubly disempowered group.

Do you think 15 year olds should vote? Do you think 14 year olds should vote? Do you think 13 year olds should vote? Do you think 12 year olds should be able to enter contracts? It's arbitrary but necessary. Children shouldn't be burdened with such responsibilities and freedom.

If I actually believed all or even most kids had parents who were genuinely both willing and able to look out for their interests on their behalf it would be much easier for me to agree with you

So what, now you're generally suspicious of parental rights and responsibilities in general? I really don't get the point here.

The instant you start saying "rights and responsibilities" I am instantly EXTREMELY suspicious Parenting is not a right and does not entail rights It is all responsibility

Look, I didn't even actually say I want to abolish the family unit and raise children in communal creches But the thing is the people who try to make a case for responsible, accountable parenting are always the ones who scare the fuck out of me when talking about it

"Do you think Joe down the street could possibly be a better father to MY son than *I* could be?" I don't know you or Joe, so how the fuck would I know Quite likely -- why wouldn't he be

It's no more likely than the biological parent being the better and more equipped guardian so again, what is your point?

Right, which is why I didn't suggest rolling the dice and assigning people to parents randomly I think children's welfare should be something all of society takes a far greater interest in, with an emphasis on the child's own choices and preferences
