Do you think 15 year olds should vote? Do you think 14 year olds should vote? Do you think 13 year olds should vote? Do you think 12 year olds should be able to enter contracts? It's arbitrary but necessary. Children shouldn't be burdened with such responsibilities and freedom.

If I actually believed all or even most kids had parents who were genuinely both willing and able to look out for their interests on their behalf it would be much easier for me to agree with you

So what, now you're generally suspicious of parental rights and responsibilities in general? I really don't get the point here.

The instant you start saying "rights and responsibilities" I am instantly EXTREMELY suspicious Parenting is not a right and does not entail rights It is all responsibility

Look, I didn't even actually say I want to abolish the family unit and raise children in communal creches But the thing is the people who try to make a case for responsible, accountable parenting are always the ones who scare the fuck out of me when talking about it

Maybe he's smarter than you, or he's a fundamentally nicer and kinder person than you Maybe he and your son have more in common than you do, or he has a greater capacity to perform emotional labor of the kind your son needs I don't fucking know

I do know that your son was basically "assigned" to have you as a parent by pure chance, and that a belief that you have some kind of natural magical connection to him through DNA that means you are automatically the only person who can make the right decisions for him is insane

Nobody is arguing that every biological parent is necessarily th best and most equipped to raise their child, but what is an actual viable alternative? What is the point of your uneasiness with traditional family units? What do you want to change?

I would prefer for the *power* parents have to be far more limited There's a lot of justified complaints about the way CPS and similar institutions work, but having a *balance of power* between the bureaucracy and parents at least gives children more protection

I like Noah's insistence on centering the child themselves in all of these conversations, even if I'm not ready to throw in with him on a full-on children's rights platform It should be far, far easier for children to "divorce their parents"
