this thread is funny because I both highkey agree with a lot of what it's saying, but also, enjoy misery when it's what I know I'm signing up for; a lot of the most emotionally satisfying media I've ever consumed has been absolutely harrowing.https://twitter.com/clairewillett/status/1281339393500835840 …

The woman writing it identifies as a "Catholic feminist" and her overall argument seems to be pretty pro-uwu so frankly I'm tossing it in the trash and blocking her

I'm just thinking about how David Foster Wallace made this big thing over how David Lynch was a rare and precious gift, being a successful artist who clearly didn't give a flying fuck about his audience at all

And, like, whatever else you say about him you can't be mad at him for manipulating or bullshitting you because he clearly doesn't give a shit about you on any level and is making the movie entirely for his own sake

Anyway this whole set of takes is pretty alienating to me and also is like really blatantly advertising that the speaker wants to be manipulated and fucked with but more power to them I guess

I mean, the context I read into the woman posting the take I disagreed with was that fanfic etc. is superior to media that has a strong creative vision that might upset fans. And I didn't agree with that, not bc I want to be fked with exactly, but bc I want to experience >

And the fanfic that works the hardest for me, local Longterm Fanfic Liker, is in fact fic that has a strong creative vision that might upset me and that I wouldn't be able to predict (other Fanfic Likers find emotional satisfaction in very different ways tho)

Fic that's literally just filling a prompt isn't always bad but tends to turn me off pretty viscerally
