The Dialogue With Fans:tm: ND’s fielding is spam, slurs, and death threats, which means they’re unlikely to consider “in our mentions” as a meaningful source of market-related signal even if people were @‘ing them

Right, but again,I'm worried more about the circle of games critics who are openly queer and who pretty much all said things about how they wished the game was more peaceful which could lead to the deduction that the Queers are just floppy innocent girly people who can't take it

So three options off the top of my head for “why focus on queer characters this much”: A) significant amount of the team wanted to B) appeal to the Queers C) anti-g*mergate signaling

I think the studio that sinks this much time/effort/money into something that does (C), especially when almost their entire dev timeline tracks with “GG exists” (right?), might be placing a meaningful bet there too—the “opposite of TROS” approach to risk of toxic fandom

Absolutely, and that only pays off if not-GG buys it, as opposed to writes thinkpieces about how it should be Stardew Valley.

is stardew valley even that queer, or is it just the cutesy aesthetic? i mean yes any character is romance-able by anybody but like you can marry anyone in skyrim that's the marrying kind too

My point is we have been forced into this cutesy aesthetic. We have been told "being queer means you are weak and traumatized, here are nice happy games with no emotional depth for you"

okay, that makes sense it's just like... how queer can a game be when you the player character are just like a silent schmoo fellas, is being a ditto gay? in this essay i will, etc

Most games queer people like barely get into being queer but that's because there is an aggressive resistance to the idea that our entertainment would ever make us uncomfortable or challenge us or be like what the cishets consume

What today's queers seem to want is to be a superior society, apart from the cishets, enjoying fine wines (but non-alcoholic of course) and petting alpacas and giving blowjobs covered in glitter. Whereas I always have wanted "what the cishets have, except not cishet."

Uh oh that sounds like assimilationism

(In all seriousness this is kind of a bizarre inversion, like it used to be that accusations of assimilationism came with accusations of being in a middle class cult of comfort)
