I'm actually not sure where I first picked up the sudden violent protagonist swap thing from. (To be clear, Last of Us 2 doesn't actually do this; we knew Joel wasn't going to be the main protagonist. But I think audiences respond similarly)

Like I've always just had this idea that the ideal story I want to tell is about someone it doesn't appear to be and that the false protagonist should be killed suddenly somewhere near the middle, but I honestly don't know where I have seen it, it's not super common

Psycho is an extremely famous example of fundamentally breaking the rules of storytelling in a memorable way

Replying to @arthur_affect @BootlegGirl
It used to be common for theaters to let people wander in and out of screenings while the movie played on loop - you'll see old pop culture reference leaving in the middle of something going "This is where we came in", which is a reference to this practice

Hitchcock banned this for Psycho and him insisting on theaters forcing people to watch the movie from the beginning helped change moviegoing culture Seeing ANYTHING from the second half of the movie is a massive spoiler that ruins the twist
