I'm actually not sure where I first picked up the sudden violent protagonist swap thing from. (To be clear, Last of Us 2 doesn't actually do this; we knew Joel wasn't going to be the main protagonist. But I think audiences respond similarly)

It used to be common for theaters to let people wander in and out of screenings while the movie played on loop - you'll see old pop culture reference leaving in the middle of something going "This is where we came in", which is a reference to this practice
