Are you fucking kidding me Nobody ever heard of women writing books before JKR did it in *checks notes* 1997? Well gosh if nobody had ever heard of Ursula K Le Guin, Diana Wynn Jones or Jill Murphy before then I guess she did them a favor by ripping them off https://t.co/7OLHaj7P6U

Which is why I said “commercial success” - 90% of her $500M+ sales is 7 books over 20 yrs vs Christies 88 over 100. Even her own career post-HP will never match HP. But all of that also makes her an absurd benchmark for *anything* let alone whether women were successful writers.

In fact, it’s almost disingenuous to even treat JKR’s career as one whole - when it comes to commercial success, there’s HP, then there’s the rest of her career. HP’s success is a complete fluke in every possible way. She got very, very, VERY lucky.

But, is it better to have one cash cow that people keep wanting you to replicate but you never can, or have a name that is a brand where people will buy your every book, like Christie or Barbara Cartland?

As an old Gen-Xer who read LOTS & LOTS of books in the YA fantasy genre, I’m skeptical that she’ll be a bankable name in 100 years like Austen & Bronte.
